![]() Like several of these friends, Dennis was an ultrasound technician, a field he'd chosen not because he'd grown up with a desire to know what lay beneath surfaces but because after a rough emotional time in college and then a shaky recovery, he'd seen a convincing ad on the subway for ultrasound school. He liked to play touch football on the weekend with his friends who sometimes came to the apartment afterward for beer and pizza, high-fiving one another without evident irony. He was big, black-haired, male, artless, at least in the sense that he had no art, no personal need for refined aesthetics. "My Chia Pet," she'd called him in bed back in the beginning, twenty-eight years earlier. He couldn't seem to keep his face free of hair growth. He always looked too big for their small New York kitchen, his body solid and indelicate, his movements broad. Jules brought it into the kitchen, where Dennis stood over the stove in his Rutgers sweatshirt. Beside the fresh pile was the square card that had been lying on the front hall table for a couple of days already, unopened. She stood and looked at the mail that had accrued today, a small, dull pile of bills and cards. ![]() When Jules opened the front door, the apartment was bright with cooking apparently Dennis was making steamed five- spice chicken. ![]() ![]() ![]() Indeed, as Edward Gibbon noted in his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", Procopius " successively composed the history, the panegyric, and the satire of his own times." The difference in the nature of these works makes Procopius unique among historians of antiquity, but has also made him the source of some suspicion among modern scholars. The sharp differences between the nature of these books has puzzled historians of later centuries. But he also wrote two other very different books - the "Anecdota" or "Secret History", probably dated to 551 and compiled simultaneously with Book VII of "The Wars", and the "On Buildings", probably dated to 554-5. Books I-VII, covering the years 527-550, were published in 550-1, and Book VIII, which brought the record up to 553, in 554. His reputation is mainly founded upon his "Histories of the Wars" of the reign of Justinian (527-565 A.D.) in eight books. ![]() ![]() ![]() Procopius of Caesarea, is the last great Greek historian to write in the classical tradition of Herodotus, Thucydides and Polybius, and, although he wrote in the Sixth Century A.D., right at the end of the classical era, and on the cusp of the Dark Ages, he was one of the greatest of these historians. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lean and mean, with no excess bulk or filler, this volume is sure to find an audience. Often she is cast as Hahn's Mitarbeiterin sometimes she is completely invisible, as in one of the world's great science museums, which for 30 years displayed the fission apparatus–equipment assembled by Lise Meitner on a table in her laboratory in her physics section of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Chemie-without ever mentioning her name. One writer sees her work “crowned by the Nobel Prize for Otto Hahn” another, once director of an institute that bears her name, portrays her as the physicist who obstructed the discovery from the start. Especially in Germany the staging seldom varies: Otto Hahn in the spotlight, Fritz Straßmann in his shadow, Lise Meitner in the wings, dimly outlined in reflected light. Of her pioneering work in nuclear physics, little is said she is remembered primarily for nuclear fission, a discovery in which she did not share. Much has been written about Lise Meitner, but she remains on the periphery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That is the romantic basis for the story but there is so much more to it.
